“Microcosms” is an artists’ book investigating the long history of environmental racism and injustice in three of Baltimore’s neighborhoods along the Patapsco River: Curtis Bay, Brooklyn, and Fairfield. This book is one of an edition of three and resulted from extensive research and on-site investigation, as well as discussions with residents, environmentalists, and many of Blue Water Baltimore’s members and archives. This semester-long project aims to highlight some critical issues within Baltimore’s institutions and systems that originated during Baltimore’s foundation and have had a huge impact on these neighborhoods.

“Side B” is a series of 5 monoprints. An anthotype is an image created using photosensitive material from plants under the influence of light. Five variations were composed using leaves foraged in Bolton Hill, and printed using blue relief ink. The image of the cassette was lino printed on top as a second layer. These prints are a reflection of the relationship between technological prowess and all that is organic and natural.

“Kenopsia” is a linoleum relief print that features an endless landscape of abandoned architecture. The print aims to describe the emotional afterimage of a place that feels painfully empty and forlorn. It echoes the image of the place being previously bustling with life but is now devoid of it. This print was created as a reflection of the feeling of returning back to a home that is full of memory, but will never be the same again.
