Axel Nicholson
My name is Axel Nicholson (18) and I am a studio art major at the University of Maryland, College Park. I have been an artist all my life, and mainly I work with watercolor, oil paint, and digital media. I am pursuing a double major in marketing in the future as I pursue a career in entertainment and design.
I am mixed race, my mother is Chinese and my father is white, but that doesn’t mean I identify any less with my culture. This painting is my memory of my grandmother’s kitchen in Beijing, China on a day my cousin brought over a massive fish for us to share. I remember sitting next to the tub and watching the fish as my mother cooked it. My aspiration for the future is for everyone to be able to carry on small but meaningful things, like food and family, to those that come after us so they may carry with them memories and reminders of their culture.
