PHOTOGRAPHER: CATRECE ANN TIPON

about the art

Each photograph tells a personal story of anger, sadness, perseverance, happiness, love, and complete ecstasy. I wanted to explore the different facets of the human condition while relating it to a crossing borders theme. I always gravitate towards people because each person is so unique in their own way, but what gives them common ground is this need to cross borders, or boundaries, to understand each other more and to learn from each other.

A lot of my portraits revolve around People of Color. My goal is to give them a voice, that is so often silenced by society’s unnerving standards. By giving them a voice, they too give others a voice and it becomes a cycle of positivity and growth.

I included a picture of a heart that was surrounded by cages because I felt it showed how we all have been feeling lately: Caged in socially, mentally, emotionally, and trying to break out of that cage now may feel like a death sentence. I wanted to show that it is never too late and, with time, we can share each other's hearts again and hope for a better future with each other regardless or our differences.

About the Artist

Born in St. Louis, MO, but raised in Maryland, I've never been the type of person who sticks to one path. While I earned my Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Catholic University, I continued to pursue other artistic passions such as music (in which I minored), dance, theatre, and, of course, photography. As my passion for photography grew and my skills as a photographer evolved, I finally decided to pursue it alongside my nursing career.

Pictures have always piqued my interest. I am a visual learner with a somewhat short memory, so the best way for me to remember anything and everything is through pictures. My life revolves around diverse communities of people, whether I’m taking care of them in the hospital or capturing their beauty through portraits. What I love most about portrait photography is that it allows me to meet, learn, and understand all sorts of people from different backgrounds, which in turn opens my mind to the many facets and complexities of being human.

I feel the most pride in my work when I show my clients how beautiful they are and see the smiles on their faces.
